GENRE: POP-PUNK
The Night Before has now become one of the more well-known bands of this generation, showcasing Punk (and more commonly Pop Punk) in all its glory. From their first official release in the fall of 2012, titled Light’s Absence, they have skyrocketed through the charts, becoming one of the higher selling artists on the market over four releases – those releases surprisingly spanning only a year. The band has had their disputes, certainly. But the four, chopping and changing as they have done, have become a strong core, with high hopes of being the frontrunners in later tours.
The Beginning
The band, merely a sideshow at the time, formed in late 2008, originally composing of Derek, Damien and Lee. The three had met previously whilst studying at the same college in Knoxville, Tennessee, only coming together under the alias of ‘The Night Before’ some years post-graduating. At first, they performed at a very local level, only occasionally going outside their hometown for gigs and concerts with bands such as Reach and at one point, Hooded Hades; however soon the college-vibe they tried to conform to no longer fitted the wants of lead guitarist, Lee. Announcing their departure to the small local fan group they
had collected over a two year stint, they relocated to Brighton, England. Unfortunately, a departure from their hometown also meant a departure from the band for Bassist, Rick – his studies, in which he was nearing his finals, took precedence over his musical aspirations. Certainly a loss, seeing as he had been the band’s entrance way into the local recording studios, thanks to his knowledge of the field and his famed “connections”.
Nevertheless, to Brighton they traversed; rather comically staying at a relative of Lee’s house for the first few weeks. The search for a bassist began in earnest; Derek even travelling as far north as Liverpool, the proclaimed birthplace of rock n’ roll. It was only come May, 2012 that the band acquired Rae, a multi-talented musician from Essex – his discovery being thanks to a handy advert played over the British spin-off of Carnage TV: Chaos TV. Rae’s introduction to the band was short and sharp, as after only two months of being involved in the group, they were heading to London for the Big Night Out festival. So by late August, they had performed with bands like The Fist and 1st Assault who had travelled east to join so many other big names on the stage in England, and had two releases (Light’s Absence and Cut Through The Darkness). Post-August, the band’s look and sound evolved significantly, changing from predominantly Hard Rock to Punk and Pop-punk; this change was mainly thanks to Derek, who had played in such bands in his college days. This amalgamated into The Night Before’s release, Fight Back, a hit in the charts on their chosen record label, POM Records.
Now
As of yet, the band has had one ‘best hits’ album, Evolution, celebrating the band’s change of music style and their road to becoming the artists they are now. They have also released a self-titled EP, released in early 2014, and are currently participating in the Bleach Festival and Wasteland Tour. The band is looking forward to the latter half of 2014 with the tour and a possible new release in the aftermath.

'Album' is The Night Before's call back to their rough beginnings; from a Knoxville garage to a Brighton night club. Moving away from a more hard punk style in previous releases, the band has developed into a leading light in the Pop-Punk community. As well as their original songs, collaborations with bands such as Conscientia and Forever The Young make this a fantastic insight into old-style The Night Before.
